SURVEY OF PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN’S FEET

The New Zealand Standards’ Institute is conducting a survey of the feet of and 7000 pre-school children in order to obtain data for footwear lasts which will ultimately be used for the local manufacture of standard ?hoes for children. The Plunket Society is co-operat-ing with the Standards’ Institute in this important work by arranging appointments for a specified number of children to have their fe.et measured. by the Institute’s foot fitting experts at the Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Masterton Pre-School Clinics. It is generally agreed that unsuitable and badly fitting footwear is responsible for much of the foot discomfort which is so prevalent today, so any efforts directed towards footwear reform will have the wholehearted support of the Plunket Society.

Small children, like adults, have narrow, medium or wide feet, therefore every child should have its feet properly fitted for new shoes. We look forward, to the day when this practice will become universal. Mothers no doubt, look forward to the time when they will not have to “do the town” to procure even the right sized shoes for their young hopefuls.
