HILLCREST FIRE THREAT

FROM the security of the cooling autumn days, we are apt to forget the widespread indignation which periodically fills this town as summer fires sweep up the Hillcrest slopes denuding them of vegetation and threatening the picturesque homes on the top. The matter has been brought home to us by the action of the Fire Brigade which has already fought numerous outbreaks over the broken cliff-face, by refusing to accept further responsibility owing to the limited water supply. The serious note of warning which has been sounded will be offset to some degree by the auxiliary reservoir which has been recently completed and which will make for a substantial temporary supply to cover fire needs.
