RUGBY FOOTBALL
SATURDAY’S GAMES WAIR AKA’S IMPROVED FORM The best game in Whakatane last Saturday was that between Poroporo and Wairaka. It was in effect anybody’s game right up until the final whistle, though the much-improved Wairaka side territorially had by far the best of the game. On the other field another cricket score eventuated in the match Paroa v P.W.D. The new club with seven men 'on the injured list was sporting enough to field a very weakened side and take the drubbing handed out to it by last year’s champs. They are to be admired for their gameness. On the Waimana field _ United, playing in poor form was lucky to wrest victory from a determined local side. Waimana is settling down to sound football and will be in the running for points honours. On the junior fields United played consistently well against Paroa and had no trouble, in pulling off a victory. At Taneatua Poroporo had its work cut out to narrowly defeat a hard-playing and keen local side.
