WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT THORNTON The May meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs Robb presiding over a good attendance. A special welcome was extended to Mrs Armstrong, the Federation President.

The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode and the reading of the Aspirations. The minutes were read and correspondence dealt with.

Bank books were presented to two members op* behalf of their babies. The report on the annual Council meeting held at Opotiki was read, and the delegates accorded a vote of thanks for their attendance. A letter from a Scottish W.R.I. was read, and members decided to accept that W.I. as a corresponding link.

After the Roll Call, “A thought for Mother” a very interesting reading on the origin of Mothers’ Day was given by Mrs Sheat. Beautiful birthday sprays were presented to three members. The meeting was then addressed by Mrs Armstrong, who explained several proposed changes in Federation functions. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and was the recipient of a lovely floral spray.. Afternoon tea made a pleasant break in the programme. A vocal duet by Mesdames Goodwin and Arbuckle was very much enjoyed. The Glee Circle then entertained with a song. A smocking demonstration by Mrs Gardner proved extremely interesting and instructive. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. Winners of the day’s competitions were as follows:

Best bloom: Mrs Goodwin 1, Mrs Bell 2. ' Best vegetable: Mrs Sheat 1, Mrs Gardner. 2.

Tomato relish: Mrs J. Branch 1, Mrs Watts 2.

Artificial posy: Mrs Gardner l h Mrs J. Branch 2. Plate of flowers: Miss P. Jackson 1, Mrs J. Branch 2.
