No Chocolate For Mr Fraser
A country storekeeper last week had to refuse a request for chocolate from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser. Mr Fraser was on his tour of the hydro-electric works and when his car arrived at a small town near Putaruru, the secretary approached the storekeeper for confectionery. The reply was characteristic of that heard all over the country: “Sorry, I haven’t got any!” Use of Leisure “One of the first things which struck me on my return to this country after an absence of more than 30 years was the extraordinary amount of free time enjoyed by the citizens,” said Dr<. J. A. Gillison, a London medical practitioner who is visiting Christchurch. “I am not sure that % all this leisure time is as it should be—perhaps too much emphasis is placed on sports and racing. The average business man and working man does not seem to have much detailed knowledge of his own country’s flora and fauna, for instance. Another point which struck me as unusual is that many people living close to the beautiful Southern Alps have never been bothered about going to the mountains.”
