WOMENS INSTITUTE

WAIMANA BRANCH ( . MAY MEETING The Waimana-Nukuhou branch of the Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting last Wednesday afternoon. There was an excellent attendance of members and several visitors. Mrs R. Looney presided and welcomed Mrs Caverhill, the Eastern Bay of Plenty representative to the Dominion Council, and Mrs Withy, V.O. The singing of the Institute song opened the proceedings, and Mrs Hewitt f-ead the aspirations. The president then read Mrs Barnicoat’s letter from the “Home and Country,” which was most inspiring and instructive. The minutes were read and confirmed and correspondence dealt with. Corso Appeal In an appeal to help Corso, it was decided to send a large tin of soap to Greece next month, and • parcels of other goods required at later dates. Two new members were welcomed, Miss Tizard and Miss Girvin. Mrs Wylde then gave a full and interesting report on the Annual Federation meeting held at Opotiki recently. A letter was also read by Mrs Wylde, which was received from Kelsby Institute, Rugby, England, thanking the Institute for parcels received and saying how greatly they were appreciated. The V.O. Mrs Withy of Matata, gave a short address on Institute affairs, and Mrs Caverhill gave a comprehensive report on the Dominion Council meeting held at Christchurch recently. The speaker stated that Mrs Barnicoat was very proud with the work W.l.’s was doing for Corso. Both speakers were presented with a shoulder spray of flowers and accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

Japanese Life After a delicious afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Rowland White, convenor of the entertainment for the mieeting, arranged a programme on Japan, which proved most entertaining and eduea--tional. Mrs R. White spoke on music, China and good. Rice and chopsticks were on view and many other articles of great interest. The history & geography of Japan was given by Miss Z. White; Japanese customs by Mrs S. Eagle and religion by Mrs C. N. White. Competitions ‘ ;■ The day’s competitions were well entered for, nine and ten entries being received in most competitions. Mrs Caverhill and Mrs W. Fenton kindly acted as judges and the results were as follows: Best single flower: Mrs Hampton I, Mrs I. Savage 2, Mrs Whiteman 3. Double flower: Mrs H. Bell I, Mrs King 2, Miss F. Woolfield 3. Vase of autumn leaves and berries: Mrs King 1, Mrs Stevenson 2, Mrs Woolfield 3. jam: Mrs Stevenson 1, Miss Currie 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs J. Boynton 2, Miss F. Woolfield 3. Mrs Hughes Snr. had two homemade candles on view and explained the making of same. A milking inflation was used for a mould. At the conclusion of a very interesting afternoon, Mrs Looney thanked Mrs R. White and helpers for the splendid entertainment, also Mrs Caverhill and Mrs Withy, judges and hostesses. The singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
