TALLY HO!

HUNTING SEASON OPENS RANGITAIKI WARD The local opening Hunt of the 1947 season took place last Saturday afternoon at Taneatua. As was the case last year, at the inaugural hunt, much public interest was evinced in this very popular sport, and visitors from many parts of the Bay attended to swell the large local following of enthusiasts present. The day proved ideal for hunting, and was commenced by the traditional Hunt Breakfast which was proclaimed by all to be a great success, and congratulations are indeed due to those ladies who so capably handled the. catering arrangements and served such a tasty repast to the' two hundred odd guests present. The following toast list was honoured: The King, Landowners, Visitors, Hunting, Kindred Sports and Ladies.

The Hunt

Followers moved off from the Taneatua Hall at 12.30, and proceeded to Mr J. Moody’s property where the Hunt was opened by Miss P. Cradwick taking the first jump in good style. A large interested crowd of followers per car and horse watched the field of 70 horses over the fences, from the many vantage points offering in the vicinity of the properties being used. Hqres were plentiful and several fast runs were made, the last of which gave the riders a speedy chase over many fences, culminating in a' kill being made on the property of Mr Neil Reid. ,

At about 3 o’clock, the following returned to the Taneatua Hall and enjoyed an excellent afternoon tea provided by the ladies.

The jumping was of a very high standard, and all those present were unanimous in declaring, the day an unqualified success, and the forerunner of a very enjoyable and popularly supported hunting season.
