HILLCREST SCRUB FIRES
BRIGADE’S DIFFICULTIES NO WATER SUPPLY In view of the fact that there was no water supply available at Hillcrest fires in that suburb could not be held as the responsibility of the Fire Brigade but must be considered as the responsibility of the Borough Council was the gist of a letter received by the Borough Council.
Cr S. S. Shapley stated that Whakatane had a very efficient Fire Brigade who were thoroughly trained in fire fighting. The organisation was a volunteer one and he hoped it would continue as such. Regarding Hillcrest fires the council was of the opinion, that property owners should take more precautions and the cutting of firebreaks was advocated. Estimates and Balance The Brigade annual balance sheet and estimates were also tabled. Cr Shapley stated that the Fire Brigade levy, had gone up but this was only to be expected in view of the rising costs. A trailer pump had recently been purchased and this represented considerable expenditure.
Cr Creeke stated that the rise in expenses was general. The Sydney Fire Brigade which had once cost £200,000 to run now cost about £500,000.
