THE RISE OF HOCKEY
NO other winter pastime in this district can claim the rapid rise to popularity that the game of Hockey now enjoys. Affiliated to. the Whakatane Association are no less than thirtytwo teams, both ladies and mens. The standard over the weekend revealed some very promising material, from which will be chosen the representatives to participate in the White Horse Cpp competitions in Auckland. The game appears to be particularly popular with the Maori communities, the latest applications come from well down the East Coast indicating that still further groups desire to link up. Hockey, one of the primary winter sports for physical development and quick thinking has more than made the grade in Whakatane and we look forward confidently to bigger things in future.
