RACING NEWS & VIEWS
Back to the Saddle The well known hurdle horseman of Hamilton, F. Hain, is resuming riding at the Waikato Meeting this week. Another For Australia The Christchurch gelding, Pendesto, has been purchased by Mr T. Quin, a visitor from Queensland. The Doomben £IO,OOO The Hastings trained, Da Vinci, is to contest the £IO,OOO Doomben Handicap to be decided in July. His chances on “the other side” are considered bright and rightly so, as his trainer, veteran Jack Cameron, has had many years of experience and has taken candidates.to Australia on many occasions. Whackie For Hurdling Whackie is now being trained at Trentham. Later' in the season he will be competing in hurdle events. In the meantime he has a lot' to learn in the art of jumping, but he is a big, strong type of thoroughbred and is likely to make good at the game. A Cup. Prospect The Gisborne horse, King’s Ransom, whose pedigree was noted last week, has now gone into winter quarters. In his last start this season at Hastings, he carried the welter weight of 10.2, and won without being extended. He is regarded in well versed racing circles as a fine Cup prospect for next season. His record for this term is five wins, two seconds, one third and a fourth. Stable Acquisitions The Takanini trainer, T. F. Verner who has achieved fame with the champion miler, Sleepy Fox, has just taken in hand three promising yearlings, one by Medieval Knight, .a half brother to Kerry Lad, the others being by Tide Race—Laughing Lass and Arvakur—Mooradabad.
May Be Hurdled Mr W. S. Goosman’s Jollac, is not' proving a success on the flat, so may be put to hurdle racing in due course. The Dozer Progressing Hector Gray’s The Dozer, is getting through a strong preparation in view of steeplechasing, and the opposition may find him still difficult to cope with over the obstacles. The Doomben Handicap It is on the cards that Sleepy Fox may be sent over to Australia to compete in the £IO,OOO Doomben Handicap to .be run in July. Sleepy is considered in some quarters to be a bad traveller, but it must not be forgotten that last year when he visited Australia he won his first two races in brilliant style. Winterset 12.6 The Australian steeplechaser, Winterset, is likely to be seen out in the Waikato Steeplechase this week. He is top weight, 12.6, but he will not be unduly troubled with this impost.
