For Discerning Shoppers Attention is/drawn to F. M. Abbott’s advertisement on page 8 covering that firm’s Specialty Trading Department, and the new bargains to be made there in utility gifts for Mother’s Day. All these lines will be eagerly sought by discerning shoppers. Utilising Waste Steam With a view to conserving the steam which has hitherto been allowed to escape into the open air at the rear of the Annexe, the Whakatane Hospital Board has agreed to a suggestion of the engineer, which will divert, the steam jet for- pre-" heating the water before entering the boiler. .

Projected Scouts Hall Following an interview with Professor Corbin of the Whakatane Paper Mills Directorate, the projected building of a log cabin to serve as a Scouts Hall in McGarvey’s Road will probably be abandoned in favour of a more permanent structure in concrete blocks-. Plans and other details are now under discussion.

Hospital Statistics The following statement for April showing the Whakatane Hospital statistics was submitted to the Board by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. E. T. Dawson yesterday: Patients at beginning of April 91 (41 male, 50 female); admissions 122 (47 and 75); discharges 118 (44 and 74); deaths 4 (2 and 2); patients at end of April 91 42 and 49); births 43 (23 and 20); operations major 6, minor 47. The daily average occupied bed was 88.13.• '

Mysterious Letter Bearing all the earmarks of a first-class mystery a letter in fluent German was picked up by a Heads resident recently and brought to the Beacon Office for interpretation. Always willing to adopt the role of sleuth the Beacon newshounds were quickly on the scent. A little Sherlock Holmes technique quickly adduced the story behind the missive. It appears that a local resident was corresponding with an Austrian pen friend and had inadvertently dropped a portion of his last letter at the Heads. All hopes of a major inter-

national espionage scare quickly evaporated. Goodwin Marionette Theatre Whakatane is fortunate in that an appearance of the Goodwin Marionette Theatre for May 27 has been arranged by the Community Arts Service. ‘‘The Tempest” and “The Reluctant Dragon” are being shown and these make up a programme well worth seeing. Puppet theatres are in existence in many countries and the New Zealand Company has received high praise as being among the best in the world. During -the war years shows were presented to servicemen and women all over' New Zealand and these again received tributes from all who were fortu-. nate enough to see them. As one I who has seen a performance of thetheatre the writer would advise residents to book early so that they will not fail to see the really outstanding attraction.
