“THE ETERNAL QUEST”

Martial, Nautical or Ethical, Monetary or political, A Soldier Sailor of Statesman’s dream, Of what is to be, or might have

been. A vital spark within the breast That kindles unquenchable unrest; That promps the age-old baffling

quest, Along the ancient blood x marked

trail; Maybe to find the Holy Grail, Eldorado or the philosopher’s stone, Or something so many wish to own, To place them independently Above indigent penury. A keen aspiration to be, A composer of sublime harmony, Or author of superb poetry, Soldiers, Sailors..and Pioneers. Explorers, inventors and engineers, With sword and spear, sail and

steam, Followed the intriguing gleam, Through storm and sunshjne, hail

and rain, O’er desert drear and fertile plain. Scarlet rugged heights with bated breath, With but a step twixt them and

death. Charted distant unknown seas, Where hunger, thirst and treacherous breeze, Awaited those whose time had come, To die far away from friends at home; Leave their shipmates to proceed, And ultimately to succeed. Thus road and rail and steam and

sail, Followed the painfully blazed trail, That circumnavigates the earth, And proves the inestimable worth,/ Of those who with exultant breast, Pursued the eternal baffling quest, In spite of opposition sore, Which made heroes determine more: To carry on to the journey’s end, Where all life’s devine’s ways will blend, And the problem of the eternal quest, Will be solved by eternal peace and rest. H. SERGANT.
