GIRL GUIDES

GARDEN PARTY TANEATUA, 4th WHAKATANE On April 26 the Taneatua Guides and Brownies combined to hold a successful garden party . at Mrs Ricketts’ residence. Brilliant sunshine favoured the occasion and a pleasant afternoon resulted. In a brief speech of welcome to the visitors Guide Commissioner Santon opened the' function. “Flying Up” Ceremony A “Flying Up” ceremony was performed on the lawn when Gail Carpenter, having been presented with her first class badge by Brown Owl Mrs Ricketts, “flew up” to the Guide Company. Mrs Ricketts presented second class badges to the following Brownies: Janet Hill, Margaret Lawn, Rosemary Reid, Dawn Mitchell and Jeon Torrie. These then “walked up” to the Guides and were welcomed by Gukfer Mrs Moore.

Enrolment Ceremony

An renrolment ceremony was held and two recruits, Josephine Brown and Aroha Wilson were enrolled by Captain Righton of Whakatane. Ladder croquet and putting competitions were marked out on the lawn and were well patronised. The bring and buy stall was well stocked and did a brisk trade. Afternoon tea was served to the visitors on seats placed around the garden. Results The ladder croquet was won by Miss Righton, the putting competition by Mrs. Semmens and guessing the weight of a cake by Mrs Brown. As a result of the day the sum of £ls was raised for Guide and Brownie funds. The company and pack would like to thank all those who gave so generously or who helped in any way to make the afternoon the success it was. COMMITTEE MEETING COMMISSIONER’S SUMMARY A committee the Whakatane Girl Guides was held in the Borough Council Chambers on March 28. In attendance were Mesdames Drake (chair), G. Santon (commissioner), Hannah, Kingsley-Srhith, Chadwick, Littlejohn, Santon Snr., Caisley and Miss Righton. Apologies ' were received from Mesdames Barry, Gartshore, McNaughton and Semmens. Accounts Accounts totalling £8 13s Id were passed for payment. Presentation A presentation was made to Mrs Drake in recognition of her service during the short period in which she'was in the district. Election Mrs Kingsley-Smith was elected president. Mrs Caisley consented to be secretary for the year. Commissioner’s Summary The commissioner’s summary was as follows: The Guides and Brownies work in the district is proceeding satisfactorily. The greatest need is for help for the present officers, who are finding it a great strain carrying on by themselves. Three warrants have been issued this quarter. Provincial prize for the greatest The Whakatane Company won the number of entries in the Martin House competition. The next meeting will be held in the Borough Council Chambers on Friday, May 30. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting.
