FOOTBALL

CREAMER MEMORIAL CUP WIN FOR KAINGAROA A Football officially opened for the -947 season on Saturday when a seven aside tournament was held in Murupara for the newly donated Memorial Cup in memory of Mr Len Creamer.

All clubs were represented, and in some cases an A and a B team were entered. The weather was ideal from a spectator’s viewpoint but a' trifle warm for playing. The ground was in good condition, and some -touches of fast football were witnessed. It is evident that most club teams will need much training to come up to Representative standard. In the final game of the tournament perhaps the most spectacular try was scored by the Kaingaroa player Shepherd, who after starting a back movement, ran round to take the outside position three times to finally score a well deserved try. The tournament was witnessed by a large crowd and the gate takings should assist the finances of the SubUnion considerably.

Probably as much enjoyed by spectators as any game of the day was a match between two seven aside teams from the local school. Wearing only shorts these youngsters provided both amusement and admiration at their keenness and knowledge' of the game. Junior and school football is to be encouraged throughout the district if it is to have a regular supply of players available for future years. Results

The results of the tournament were:—

First Round: Kaingaroa defeated Galatea 17 to 0; Ruatahuna defeated Murupara 8 to 3; Wairapakau defeated Kaingaroa B 8 to 0' Te Whaiti defeated Galatea B 10 to 5; Wairapakau B a bye. Second Round: Kaingaroa defeated Ruatahuna 3 nil; Wairapakau a bye; Te Whaiti defeated Wairapakau B 8 to nil.

Third Round: Kaingaroa defeated Wairapakau 5 to 3; Te Whaiti a bye. Final; Kaingaroa defeated Te Whaiti 6 to 3.

An enjoyable dance was held to conclude the day. There was an excellent attendance; many of the visitors delaying their homeward trip to be present.
