LAND ACQUIRED
SERVICEMEN SETTLEMENT FURTHER REHABILITATION Land acquii’ed during February for the settlement of servicemen of the recent war totalled 19,166 acres in area, capable of subdivision into 37 units. This brought the total area so held or acquired at the end of last month, to more than 607,500 acres, comprising: Acquired under the provisions of the Small Farms ACt (1932-33) for the establishment of ex-servicemen 272,749 acres; taken under Part II of the Servicemen’s ' Settlement and Land Sales Act (1943) 35,580 acres; taken under section. 51 of the same Act 85,213 acres; held bv -the Lands and Survey Department for servicemen settlement (part already allotted) 214000 acres, approximately.
Properties recently acquired comprise:— Almost 6400 acres previously belonging to the estate of the late W. E. Harris, about 22 miles from Gisborne on the Gisborne-Tiniroto Main Road. This property, which is to be known as the Waikoko Farm Settlement is estimated to divide into seven sheep farms. A property of 870 acres acquired from Messrs. E. S. Schultze and K. N. Glasgow, situated eight miles west of Marton. Considered divisible into four good fat lamb and cropping farms, the property is to be named the Makirikiri Farm Settlement. .Previously the property of the late Sir Henry Miller, over 1550 acres, six miles east of Pahiatua, will in future be known as the Touroa Farm Settlement. Suggested subdivision is two economic units. Situated 14 miles east of Mauriceville, 581 acres previously belonging to Mr E. H. Dagg. This area is to be amalgamated with the Tikitapu Estate, Ltd., and together they will be known as the Tikitapu Farm Settlement.
Adjoining the estate of the late Sir Henry Miller, a property of 300 acres situated eight miles west of Marton, acquired from Mr G. M. Lethbridge. It will be amalgamated with the aforementioned estate to form part of the Mhkirikiri Farm Settlement. Acquired from the property of Mrs E. M. Douglas, over 930 acres situated near Tikokino, Hawke’s Bay. Three fat lamb units are expected as a result of sub-division. Previously belonging to Mr T. C. Lowry, almost 2320 acres 14 miles north-east of Taihape. It is proposed to subdivide into three sheep units.
Situated four miles north-west of Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, 274 acres previously owned by Mr O. G. Blackler. Three good dairy units are expected from the subdivision.
From the property of Mrs E. H. Studholme are 3200 acres 18 miles north-west of Taihape, which, it is planned, will subdivide into six sheep farms.. Twenty-one miles south-east of Hokitika, 351 acres of freehold property, which are to be divided into three dairy units. Containing 951 acres, sub-divisible into two economic sheep units, is a property 22 miles south-east of Waipukurau, previously owned by Mr S. A. Limpus. Three miles from Kaiapoi, more than 217 acres in area, previously the property of Mrs E. M. Heywood Madeley and from which three dairy farms should result.
To be known as the Ngutaroa Farm Settlement, a property of 1220 acres freehold and 141 'acres leasehold, acquired from the estate of the late Mr W. W. Smith, and situated seven miles south-west of Palmerston North (near Linton). It is estimated that two units will result from sub-division.
