YOUNG FARMERS

THORNTON BRANCH MEETING 0 The monthly meeting of the Thornton Young Farmers’ Club was held in the Thornton Hall on Monday, April 14, at 8 p.m. After the general business, Mr E. R. Marryatt, District Secretary, gave a very interesting talk on the identification of weeds and demonstrated on various specimens brought along by club members.

At 9.20 p.m. the talk was interrupted to allow members to listen to a radio' broadcast given by Lord Bledisloe who conveyed a message of goodwill to the N.Z. Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs from its brother organisation in Great Britain.

At. the conclusion of the short broadcast, Mr Marryatt continued his lecture and was given hearty acclamation by way of appreciation from all present.

FIELD DAY

FOINTS ON ARYSHIRE CATTLE On Wednesday, April 16 a field day was held at Mr A. H. Adams property, Thornton. This was held in conjynction with the Bay of Plenty Ayrshire Cattle Breeders Association and Young Farmers’ Clubs in the district. The clubs represented were W.D.H.S., Awakeri, Otakiri, Thornton and Edgecumbe.

Mr Adams demonstrated the making of concrete bricks with the “Lightning Mould” and how to make a building with the bricks. Mr R. Barton, of Otakiri, gave a lecture and demonstration on the setting and lining up of a lever plough. He also lectured on the ploughing of different types of soil, the striking out and finishing. In the afternoon, Mr F. Hutchings of Ngakura, Rotorua, gave a very instructive lecture on the history and judging of an Ayrshire cow. A second cow was then judged by the members of the Whakatane District High School Club. The cow was then judged by Mr Hutchings who marked the competitors’ cards. The judges points for the cows were: 791 points. Prizes were given to the first three. The result was Colin Griffiths 80 points 1; George Adams and Ray Heta 801 equal, 2. At the conclusion of thp day, Mr Hutchings congratulated the boys on their judging. Mr Wright, President of the Bay of Plenty Ayrshire Breeders’ Association, also spoke. Mr Gordon (W.D.H.S.) thanked Mr Adams and lecturers for their interesting addresses. Mr J. Barr spoke on behalf of other clubs present. Mr Adams thanked all present for showing their interest in the event.

This opportunity is taken to extend special thanks to Mr Hutchings for coming from Rotorua and giving such an interesting and instructive lecture, Mr Barton for his very efficient and beneficial lecture on the plough, Mr Adams for the use of his farm and stock and Mrs and Miss Adams for the very acceptable lunch they provided.

TANEATUA Y.F.C. ANNUAL MEETING , The Taneatua Young Farmers’ Club held its first annual meeting in the Taneatua Hall on Monday, March 17. There was a good attendance of members and the meeting was also attended by Mr E. R. Marryatt, Secretary District Committee, Mr H. White, Chairman District Committee, and Mr J. T. Cain. A report covering the club’s activities during the year was presented by the chairman, while the balance sheet proved that the club was in a good financial position and showed a credit balance of £35. The election of officers resulted as follows: -

. Senior Advisory Member, Mr G. R. Yeoman; advisory members, J. E. Rae, G. Santon, N. Reid; club chairman, E. N. Le Heron; vicechairman, J. O’Brien; secretary, R. Hill; treasurer, B. Murphy; delegates to district committee, G. R. Yeoman, E. N. Le Heron, R. Hill; general committee, ,G. R. Yeoman, E. Le Heron, R. Hill, B. Murphy, J. and G. O’Brien, G. Hill; hon. auditor, Mr T. E. Hamerton. The club made a donation of £25 to the Y.F.C. National War Memorial Fund. At the conclusion of the meeting both the District Chairman and Secretary addressed the gathering, an congratulated the club on its success during the year.
