Fire Prevention
In connection with the proposal to use ice plants on the Commerce Street hill face as a means of fire prevention a. letter was received from Messrs. Duncan and Davies at the April meeting of the Borough Council. The letter stated that the firm had a few samples of suitable ice plants on hand. The question of purchasing plants was left in the hands of Cr Canning who reported that he would be travelling to New Plymouth in the near future.
Important Ohope Meeting A meeting of Ohope residents will be held tonight at 8 p.m. in the Church Hall and as the matters to be discussed affect the future of every child and householder in the district, every resident should make an effort to attend. It is probably the last opportunity to increase the play grounds in this area and is the most forward move yet made in Ohope. A very large and representative meeting is expected and the town and county have a vital interest in the project.
Taking Own Medicine / Notoriously the landscape gardener’s home section is not always so hot, and the sweep’s own chimney now and then takes fire, but it was a surprise to walk into candles and kerosene lamps at Waikaremoana in the power station’s homes -and in the visitors’ hotel and the staff dining room (says the Evening Post). Unkinder, too, for the radiator twbe turned face to the back of the wardrobe cupboard on a cold, wet night, obviously not for use. It is the same at all the North Island power stations and • power station camps. They get their black-outs like the rest of New Zealand, except at the working points; there are lights there round the clock. Gala Day
The attention of readers is drawn to the advertisement elsewhere in this issue regarding the gala day to be held in aid of the St. John Ambulance on the Whakatane Domain on Saturday. Side shows, mock court, Maori items, bogus football (including a match between two wqrnen’s teams) and. many other novel and interesting attractions have been arranged and everyone who attends is assured of an enjoyable day. The aim of the day is to raise funds for the St. John Ambulance Association, a cause very worthy of citizens’ support. Children are sure of a great deal of fun as there are races for them besides side shows etc. The day is to be wound up by a dance at the King Street Hall in the evening. The Premier Orchestra will be providing the music.
