WEEKEND STORM

FOUR AND A HALF INCHES RAIN VIVID ELECTRICAL DISPLAY The past weekend will be remembered as the wettest experienced in town and district since last winter. Over 41 inches of rain were recorded in Whakatane and a greater volume on the Plains. The rain was accompanied by electrical disturbance which provided a first class lightning display on Sunday afternoon and evening.

Power and telephonic services held well in spite of the disturbed conditions but there were minor breaks throughout the district. The three rivers serving the county and all running high, notably the Whakatane, but no reports of serious flooding are reported and from what we can gather they will not be anticipated unless much heavier falls are recorded.
