Shark’s, Tooth Fossil
A large shark’s tooth which was found embedded in limestone at the Cheviot Lime Company’s pit, between Gore Bay and Cheviot, hasbeen identified as that of a carcharodon, or white shark. It is probably -• between 25,000,000 and 30,000,000 years old. The tooth was found in. the . limestone face, about 25 feet below surface level, by Mr C. N. Williams, of Gore Bay, who sent it to the Canterbury Museum.. The Cheviot lime works are- on a steep hill about three miles from the sea. Dr. R. S. Allan, Professor of Geology at Canterbury University College said the discovery of such fossils, always excited interest. They had been found near the marble outcrop at Hamner Springs, in the middle Waipara district, at Okuhu, in the Weka Pass, and in the Fairlie and Cave districts.
