OHOPE PROGRESS LEAGUE
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING ELECTION OF OFFICERS Thirty-nine members were present at the annual general meeting of the Ohope Progress League (Inc.) tvhich was held in the Bible Class Hall on March 31. Mr R. Cobbe was in the chair.
Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. Brebner, T. arner, Alan, Ross, Geering and Mesdames Warner, F. Geering and Ross. Chairman’s Report
Mr R. Cobbe stated that he presented his report with mixed feelings, a feeling of satisfaction at the successful social and financial activities of the ladies and a feeling of a regret at the efforts of parts of the community. As a result of the time devoted by the League to the question of erosion on the beach and the dedication of th eroad facing sections 1 to 58, a signed petition had been presented to the Council asking that the road be taken over.
The most pressing need was that for a district hall and no effort should be spared to provide a community centre for the young people. The chairman mentioned the question of fire protection and the fact that a team of energetic and able fire wardens had been appointed by the County Council. He extended his thanks to the secretary, Mr R. Marryatt, the local press, and the County Council. Carnival
It was decided to hold the next carnival on Boxing Day. The receipts and balance sheet for the last carnival were read by the secretary and these were adopted. A vote of thanks was accorded the secretary for his work in preparing the report and balance sheet. Election of Officers The election of officers resulted as follows: Chairman, Mr R. Cobbe: secretarytreasurer, Mr F. G. Cutler; executive, Messrs. C. H. Brebner, H. Armstrong, R. Herdman, T. McCowan, G. Mahy, R. Marryatt, C. Gordon, W. Harris, W. Clark, Mesdames Head and Marryatt; auditor, T. A. Bridger. “Learn To Swim” Pool It was decided that the first efforts of the League would be directed towards improving the surroundings of the children’s “learn to swim” pool and the public picnic ground. The League is to use its influence in support of the Domain Board in approaching the Minister of Internal Affairs re a grant on subsidy to the lears to swim pool. Vacant Sections A motion that owners of vacant sections be compelled to clear these was carried. If there was no law to this effect the League should implement the passing of one through the County Council.
