Revision of Valuation Rolls According to a notice appearing in the New Zealand Gazette, Motitir and other islands in the Bay ' of Plenty are to have a revision of valuation rolls as at March 31, 1947. Christianity in India There were now about eight million Christians in India, said the Rev. Royston Brown, New Zealand Baptist missionary from India, in an interview recently. # For several years the annual increase in the membership of the' Church in India had been 200,000, said Mr Brown.
Octopus Seizes Child Entering the water for a paddle at Corsair Bay, Christchurch, recently in the vicinity of the bathing enclosure, a girl of eight years was seized by an octopus which attached itself to her ankle. The child's 1 screams brought her father to the rescue. He dragged the child and the octopus out of the water, killing the octopus. . Crippled Children £ Attention of readers is drawn to the advertisement in this issue to the effect that the Crippled Children's Society will be holding their annual general meeting in the Borough Council Chambers on Thursday, April 17 at 8 p.m. This is a work deserving the fullest support of citizens and all interested are asked to attend.
A Strange Parcel The supply of cigarettes and tobacco has not been plentiful fof some time, and consequently employees in a Christchurch fruit market received a surprise when they found a kerosene tin full of tobacco and cigarettes included in a consignment of blackberries sent from the West Coast. The blackberries were all packed in kerosene tins, and during the course of opening them, the one containing the tobacco and cigarettes was discovered. There was a varied assortment in the tin, ranging from pipe tobacco to cigarettes and cigarette tobacco.
Willow Timber Industry "It must be a paying industry,- ■■_•■■> because a returned soldier gave up a lucrative business to take it on," said the rehabilitation officer for South Canterbury, Mr A. N. Camp-'. bell, referring at a meeting of the South Canterbury Regional Planning Council to a new and growing in*- - dustry in the 'district—the cutting of willow timber for export to Australia. Danger Money in Honey During a discussion -on wagelevels of workers in the honey industry, at a meeting of the Manawatu branch of the New Zealand Beekeepers' Association it was suggested that as statistics showed that ,- each worker in the hives received an average of 100 stings per day, the same attitude as that of the Waterside Workers' Union should be adopted and the public asked to pay, by increase in the price- of honey, "danger money" for the workers. "We may become immune to the swelling but they still sting,'* said one member amid laughter.. ..:
Cold But Cheery We are living from hand to mouth with coal; what we do get is largely '* rubbish at an exorbitant price and not very good for raising steam," says the manager of a large English manufacturing business, in a letter - to an Auckland customer. "As you know, we were compulsorily closed for three weeks in ; the electricity crisis and now, of course, there is going to be a scarcity of wood, dyestuffs and chemicals owing to closedowns of producers. It is a hard blow coming at a time when we had faced out so many other difficulties and were getting into our stride again. However, the snow is gone at last and spring is here, and they say that every cloud has a silver lining, even if it is only made a cupro-* nickel."
