WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
THORNTON BRANCH . APRIL MEETINGThe April meeting of the Thornton Women's Institute was held in the evening to enable junior members to attend. Mrs Robb presided over a very good attendance. The meeting opened with the Aspirations, followed by the rendering of an Easter song by two junior members, Misses B. Palmes and Mr McDonald. The minutes were read and the business dealt with. Delegates were apointed for the annual Council meeting and instructed on the method of voting. Competition entries for that day were finalised. Birthday sprays were presented to five members. Members were reminded of the forthcoming Children's Fancy Dress Dance.
A generous response was made to the appeal for bar soap for the Red Cross.
The visit of the Drama Tutor, was discussed and it was decided that enough members <would be available to make up a local class. Supper was served by the hosesses, Mesdames Smith and E. Stewart and Misses B. McArthur and P. Jackson.
A piano duet by Mesdames Goodwin and Smith was much appreciated. Songs were rendered by the Glee Circle in its first concerted effort. Community singing by all members concluded an enjoyable evening. Competition results were:— Best bloom: Mrs Magee-1; Mrs J. Branch 2. Best vegetable: Mrs Bell 1; Mrs Dudson 2. Biscuits: Mrs J. Branch 1; Mrs Robb 2. Apron: Mrs Ducker 1; Mrs Watts 2. Basket of flowers: Mrs Watts 1; Mrs Ducker 2.
