Basenji Barks

There was consternation at a championship dog show at Trinity Hall, Great Portland Street, London, recently. The judge was examining a “barkless”-Basenji—Central African jungle dog which is reputed to have uttered no sound other than a soft “yodel” for something like 6000 years. Without warning the dog looked up and—barked. Experts have stated, says an English writer, that, through mixing with ordinary barking breeds in this country, the Basenji will lose its characteristic silence. And it now apears that there is something in what the experts say. N.Z. Women Police “You women must see that we get our women police into uniform just as the British policewomen have uniforms,” said Mrs Dreaver, M.L.C. to a rally organised by the National Council of Women in Christchurch, “The sight of a uniform would have a psychological effect, and we need policewomen, especially to patrol the wharves and beaches,” she added. “We are in a young country and we have a lot of young people who need understanding and tolerance.”
