ELECTRICIANS MEET

WHAKATANE BRANCH ENTHUSIASTIC ANNUAL MEETING On the evening of March 27 the electricians, radio servicemen, linesmen and apprentices had their annual meeting in the Borough Chambers with approximately 30 persons being present. A considerable amount of business was gone through and the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:^ 1 — Patron: Mr J. Dicker. President: Mr F. W. Lysaght. Vice-president: Mr R. Combes. Secretary: Mr H. Drube.

Executive Members: Mr T. Hurndell, Mr R. Oxenham, Mr J. Ditchfield, Mr V. Hoskings, Mr D. Scragg. The president, Mr Lysaght, gave his report on the previous year’s activities. He laid some stress on the continued need for good and regular attendances at the monthly meetings as it was by these that knowledge and confidence could be gained as well as a sign of appreciation to those members spending considerable time in the preparation of lectures previous to their presentation to the institute, it. was little encouragement to lecturers to speak to a mere handful of members.

The president thanked Mr Dicker for his support and interest in the, apprenticeship classes now being held in Whakatane, by the provision of transport from Opotiki to Whakatane for the Opotiki apprentices. Mr Markland was also favourably commented upon for the amount of work he was putting into the education of the apprentices. Further business discussed was the possibility of visiting the new hydroelectric plant at Karapiro either during or after the filling of the lake which would most likely take place the following week.

A report of the September, 1946, wiremens’ examination was given considerable airing particularly in view of its poor results and consequent .effect on the trade in the future. Comments were made that the institute should do all it could in the training of apprentices. Mr Markland suggested that youths desire for knowledge should be noted and acted upon. -Mr Hurndell gave a short report on his visit, with Mr Drube and Mr Oxenham, to the first meeting night of the Rotorua branch. Films on cable making, forest fire service (in technicolour) made the evening a most pleasureable one.

Mr Dru.',e’s very lengthy report on his attendance at the Electricians Institute conference held in Wanganui was greatly appreciated by all the members. Outstanding points mentioned by Mr Drube were: The Electricians Institute was now recognised by the Registration Board as representation of the institute had now been given on the Registration Board. The Institute was also recognised by the Standards Institute where representation had now been approved. The president thanked Mr Drube for his report and finally moved a vote of thanks.

The meeting ended with light supper and a general feeling of goodwill amongst all.
