WHAKATANE club END OF SEASON PICNIC The* Thornton Domain was the scene of much merriment and feasting on a recent Saturday on the occasion of the end of the season picnic conducted by the Whakatane Amateur Swimming Club. Packed buses conveyed some 70 members to the outing and the weather was perfect. A full programme of field and swimming sports provided all presentwith a thoroughly enjoyable day. The events were many and varied and the ever popular tug-of-war received enthusiastic support from participants and spectators. The grand finale of this event was a pull between girls and boys. The first pull was won by the fair competitors who suffered a severe "set back" in the second pull when the rope inconveniently parted. The final pull showed the boys reluctantly acknowledging their defeat. President's Address The day was brought to a close by an address by the president, Mr A. H. Morpeth. Mr Morpeth outlined the activities of_ the club since its inception one season ago and said he would be quite justified in saying that the growth of the club in the town was pleasing to all and amazing. Last season the membership had been 25 but this number had grown to 163. He concluded by congratulating members on the good work the club had done for nonswimmers.
