THEFT OF MONEY
INCIDENT AT RUATOKI - YOUNG MAORI SENTENCED The theft of three pounds, the property of Sari Hawai, a Maori of Ruatoki cost George Whaipu, a Maori labourer aged 21, 21 days in the Whakatane Gaol when he appeared before Messrs. L. H. Brown and S. Shapley J.'sP. at Whakatane on Thursday. A plea of guilty was entered. ( Sergeant Farrell stated that when arrested "accused who was a stranger to the district stated that he had given his wallet, containing £3, to Hawai for safe keeping. When he left he received his wallet from another member of the family. On his arrival in Whakatane he found that it contained £6 and decided that Hawai had put the money there for safety, unknown to the other members of the family. Hawai had. denied receiving any wallet from Whaipu. Whaipu was convicted and senI tenced as stated above.
