Accommodation For Drovers

Writing to the Whakatane County Council the Federated Farmers of N.Z. (Auckland Province, Inc.) enclosed a -letter received from the Manawahe Hall Committee. It was stated that if accommodation cannot be provided as requested local residents would be inconvenienced in having to accommodate and feed drovers requiring shelter. The letter stated that "At a meeting of the Manawahe Hall Committee held on November 16th, 1946, the secretary was instructed to request the Branch to approach the Whakatane County Council on the matter of erecting a hut in the County paddock for sheltering drovers. It had been a practice for drovers to make use of the hall when passing through, for accommodation. It had been pointed out that no insurance would be payable should the hall be destroyed by fire while occupied by drovers. We therefore consider it advisable for a hut to be provided in the County paddock and request your assistance by referring this matter to the County Council." The Council resolved that application be referred to Cr. Burt and County Engineer for report.
