SOUTH AUCKLAND BANDS

THE TE AROHA CONTEST WHAKATANE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP Emerging the winners of the C. Grade Championship, the Whakatane Citizens Band may be safely said to have acquitted itself in a most creditable and gratifying manner at the South Auckland Bands Easter Contest at Te Aroha over the week-end. The band which is composed mainly of boy players received the highest commendation fnm the Judge, Mr. F. W. C. McLeod (Palmerston North), particularly for its quartette, which he described as giving the finest rendition of the whole contest. We warmly congratulate the conductor, Mr. W. Jarrett, on the fact that the band has returned home with both Aggregate Shield (Championship) and the Test Selection Shield, together with some thirty medals.

The contest drew a record crowd which received all performers with enthusiasm. The Herries Park on Easter Monday was packed to capacity and it is safe to say that if ever Whakatane was put well on the map it was on that occasion when its band became literally the talk of the town.
