WAIMANA RIVER

SUGGESTION OF DIVERSION

REPORT FROM OPOTIKI

At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce last week, Mr C.W. Reid stated that he had been informed from Whakatane that there was a plan afoot to have the Waimana River turned at Nukuhou and put into the Ohiwa Harbour. The Waimana Gorge would then be dry facitilating the construction of the railway and road. The suggestion was that the river would be diverted near Mr C. Wylde’s farm and flow to Mr Savage’s farm. Mr Reid contended that if there was any truth in the suggestion it would endanger the highway, as it was questionable whether the Matakerepu River could carry the volume of water. The chamber treated the matter with a certain amount of reserve, contending that in the absence of any real information they were not competent to express an opinion.
