SUCCESSFUL APPEAL

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE SOCIAL

PADDY’S MARKET DAY

All roads led to the St. John Ambulance Hall last Saturday, when the local branch of the Association held a splendidly successful Paddy’s Market and social afternoon. As a result we understand that something in the region of £l4O will be raised towards the construction of the final rear addition to the building.

Opening in the morning, the stalls which lined both sides of the building were quickly filled with produce and donated goods of all kinds. The openhandedness of the residents of town and district was to use the words of one of the senior officers of the Brigade a stimulous in itself. Crowds attended both morning and afternoon sessions and at the conclusion when a general auction was held a complete clearance was affected.

It was good to note a stall from Taneatua which did excellent business, while the ladies on the afternoon tea section were never without customers. Brisk business was maintained all day, but the most popular stalls as far as the kiddies were concerned were undoubtedly those with the soft drinks, ice cream and lucky fishing dips. Another popular diversion was the Baby Competition in which a dozen nominees were named. The winners were announced later as Baby Kathleen Candy 1, Baby Lin. Chapman 2, and Baby Jim Doust 3. All will draw prizes from Messrs. Bridgers Ltd. In thanking the patrons for their support, the chairman of the committee, Mr A. J. Canning, said that the afternoon had been a splendid success from every angle. He thanked particularly those farmers who had brought in such abundant vegetable supplies and also those who had given direct monetary donations. He mentioned the ladies from Taneatua who had worked so well and also the ladies from the Nursing Division who had attended to the afternoon tea. The Citizens Band had likewise been kind enough to play at the opening of the Paddy’s Market, and to them he also extended the committee’s thanks.

A large number of competitions were also conducted during the afternoon and these will be announced later.
