SCOUT JAMBOREE

COST NOW £285 PER HEAD <~L LOCAL NOMINEES WITH- V DRAWN Last minute arrangements ' over the past week have resulted in the steady mounting of the estimated cost per boy to the French Scout Jamboree to a point which now makes it im r practicabie for the local committees to operate and at a special meeting of delegates and Scouters last evening it was decided to recommend tft,e local Association to withdraw all „ local nominations. A week ago the price was raised from approximately £l5O to £250 per head. At an emergency meeting the committees shouldered the hew responsibility in the face of some opposition and cut the number of representatives down from eleven to five. Yesterday the latest informa- * tion from Headquarters raised the cost to £285 per head and intimated that the boys would be away for \ eight months. Acceptance or otherwise of the new conditions -was fixed for today. » Last night’s meeting discussed the matter for two hours, moving motion and counter motion until it was seen that’ it was quite impracticable to carry on raising money in the district for this purpose. In view also of the vagueness of the information as to the return of the contingent and the unsatisfactory nature of the present arrangements it was decided to devote all funds raised in. the present campaign .towards sending every eligible boy from the Whakatane district to the Pacific Jamboree which takes place . in Auckland in 1949. In fairness to those who in good faith have subscribed to’ the present fund an advertisement will offer them the 1 chance of withdrawing their donations if they so desire. A letter demanding an explanation from Scout Headquarters for the'* present unsatisfactory state of affairs will also be forwarded.
