MURUPARA PARS
Bridge Reconstruction When serious flooding of the Whirinaki River some years ago swept away the bridge at Te Whaiti the army spanned the river for traffic by the use of 'a Bailey bridge. The arrival of large quantities of materials at the bridge site indicates that an early start will .be made on the new structure at Te Whaiti. Survey pegs are also in place lower down the river at Mumpara where another Bailey bridge has been in use for some time. Scarcity of Deer Some few months ago it was not an uncommon sight to see deer grazing on the road side while driving through the Kaingaroa Forests or towards Lake Waikaremoana. But lately no reports have been received of travellers sighting deer. Stalkers state that in most areas of the district that deer are well back. They attribute their scarcity to the numbers of stalkers shooting during the past season while deer cullers have also taken heavy toll. Skin prices have also attracted more shooters than in the past and some very handsome cheques have been received for the sale of skins. Outbreak of Mumps
School attendance is seriously affected with the outbreak of mumps among children. In some cases.approximately half the class being absent.

The first sale to be held in the Mangamate saleyards, Galatea, was held on Monday, March 17. A very good yarding was offered. Prices averaged about 5/- a head higher than recent sales in the district.
Novel Rifle Range The R.S.A. who conducted a rifle range at the recent sports left nothr ing to be desired when they provided a novel range for enthusiasts/ With steel tubes unprocurable the matter was easily overcome by the use of bales of hay for a protective covering while cotton reels as pulleys and binder twine made target changing an easy matterl
Wandering Stock While driving to his home in Ruatahuna in the late evening a resident was unfortunate in damaging his car when he hit a steer wandering on the main road between Te Whaiti and Ruatahuna. Numerous instances have been noticed of late of wandering cattle in this area.
