Radio Control of Tram
Plans to install mobile radio equipment for use in controlling the board’s traffic have been approved by the Christchurch Tramway Board, and an application will shortly be made to the Post and Telegraph Department for an allocation of frequencies. It is intended to buy three service type transmitters from the War Assets Realisation Board so that two mobile stations can be sent out with vehicles when the situation requires it. The control station will be installed at the inspector’s office in Cathedral Square. When they approved these proposals, members of the board said the scheme would be helpful on race days and other periods of heavy loading on the trams and buses as it would be quicker and more convenient than using the telephone
