WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT THORNTON

The monthly and first annual meeting of the Thornton Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, March 13. There was a good attendance of members, the meeting opening with the singing of' ‘Ode to Friendship’ and the aspirations were read.

Arrangements and entries for the forthcoming Eisteddfod were discussed and finalised. ‘ The roll call, Suggestions for next year’s programmes, gave members an opportunity of making their • meetings congenial.

Mrs Robb consented to carry on her' office as president for the ensuing year, and commended her secretary, committee and members for their co-operation during the past year.

Mrs Spence voiced the sentiments of all members in her expression of thanks to Mrs Robb, and of appreciation of her untiring efforts on behalf of the Institute and other interests in the district. Mrs Ducker then read a resume of the first year’s activities of the branch and this was approved by all present. Interesting monthly meetings with some popular demonstrations and several social functions have been held. Quite a number of enthusiastic members have combined to formgardening, drama and glee circles and it has been proposed to form a junior members sircle. Members' were pleased to welcome to the meeting Mrs Withy the voluntary organiser and Mrs Caverhill and Mrs R. Withy. After afternoon tea had been served Mrs Caverhill gave a brief interesting report of a Dominion Council meeting recently held in Christchurch.

She also presented the competition prizes for the year as follows: Points Prize: Mrs Ducker 1, Mrs D. Branch 2, Mrs Watts 3. Best Flower: Mrs Robb 1, Mrs Ducker 2, Mrs Watts and Mrs Branch equal 3. Best Vegetable: Mrs Watts 1, Mrs Bell 2, Mrs D. Branch 3.

The - March prizes were:—Nut Loaf: Mrs Watts 1, Mrs D. Branch. 2. Sand Posy: Mrs Gardner 1, Mrs Robb 2. Child’s Singlet: Mrs Watts 1, Mrs Ducker 2. Best Flower: Mrs Davis 1, Mrs Gardner 2. Best Vegetable: Mrs Davis 1, Mrs Bell 2.
