A POPULAR WIN
WHAKATANE ROWING CLUB NGARUAWAHIA REGATTA ; (By “Canvas”) a Once again the local club was away for the weekend to attend a regatta. This was the final regatta of the season and it was held at Ngaruawahia. ■ There was only one local crew but they had been entered for two events, the Open Maidens and the Juniors. As these two races followed one another it was decided on the day to scratch in the maiden race and enter for the more important event the Juniors.
Only four crews faced the starter and soon after the gun it developed into a race between West End and Whakatane with the other two crews well back. With a couple of hundred yards to go West End fouled Whakatane and were disqualified leaving Whakatane the winners. This is the second time these two crews have fought it out. Last time being at Tauranga when West End narrowly defeated the local crew. The local crew was unchanged being L. Carey (s), E. Hunt (3), G. Dines (2), G. Moore (b), T. Windley (cox). This brings their record since their start in regatta work up to three firsts, two seconds and two thirds in seven starts.
It is hoped next season to see the club represented at every regatta by four crews every time.
