Woman’s Painful Ordeal A particularly painful ordeal befel Mrs V. H. Kemp, of Lovelock Street last evening, when a small bone, from some meat she had been eating became lodged in the respiratory channel and almost strangled her. She was removed to the Hamilton hospital by ambulance suffering great pain. Her condition this morning has not been ascertained.

Southland’s Eel Catch

A quarter of a million eels, representing a total as large as that for the previous 11 years, was taken from Southland streams during the season which has just closed. This effort by the Southland Acclimatisation and by representatives of canning firms should mean a great increase in the quantity available for export and a corresponding improvement in the numbers of trout in the streams.

Hospital Figures Dr. E. T. Dawson’s statistical report for the Whakatane Hospital was before the Board yesterday and details were as under: Patients in hospital at end of January 89 (43 male 46 female); admissions 139 (50 and 89); discharges 143 (56 and 87); deaths 3 (1 and 2); patients remaining in hospital 82 (36 and 46) ; bii’ths (18 and 15). Operations major 2, minor 37. Daily average occupied bed 86.321.

Hospital Gifts Acknowledged The following donations to the Whakatane Hospital for the month of February were acknowledged with thanks at yesterday’s meeting of the Board: Magazines, Mesdames A. J. Moore, Patterson, Langenmerger, Hignett, Mora and Hoyland and Mr Cannell; children’s books, Mrs Coombes; linen, Mrs Hunter; lettuces, Mr S. Cannell; lemons, Mrs J. Dodunski; vegetables, Mrs Hiki; nectarines, Mr Hewitt; plums, Mr Ewart!

Meals At Hospital “How many people have meals at the hospital who have no right to them?” was a question which Mr H. C. McCready asked of the chairman at yesterday’s meeting of the Whakatane Hospital Board. Mr Mullins said he did not know of any irregularities in this direction but would make enquiries. If there were any contractors about, he took it that it was only courtesy to invite them to have a cup of tea in the normal way. Mr Buddie added that Mr McCready probably had some information which might -be helpful to the chairman in making his investigations.
