CASE OF THEFT
CHARGE AGAINST MAORI
BLANKETS AND SINGLETS TAKEN
Pleading guilty to the theft 1 of three blankets and a singlet the property of William Oxenbridge, a Maori, William Mason, of Poroporo, was sentenced to a month’s imprisonment, when he apeared before Messrs. L. H. Brown and C. S. Armstrong, J.P.s, in the Whakatane Police Court.
Sergeant Farrell said that Mason had been leading the life of a vagrant and had been living on the goodwill and hospitality of-- the Maori communities in the district. They had however abandoned him and latterly, Mr Oxenbridge by way of assisting him had allowed him to sleep on his launch which was anchored off the Strand. Mason had repaid this kindness by stealing the articles complained of. He was sentenced as above.
