MAORIS AND LIQUOR

LOCAL POLICE PROSECUTIONS INCIDENTS AT TE TEKO AND MATATA A number of Maoris were prosecuted in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court sitting yesterday before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., for various offences relating to the consumption of liquor off licensed premises. Incidents referred to took place, at Te Teko, Matata and Whakatane.

Barney Tuke Te Whare and Albert Tauwere, were charged with assisting some person unknown in the commission of an offence by supplying them with liquor oh December 24 last. Evidence of Richard Park (Maori Warden) showed that the two defendants had been seen with bottles of liquor, which they surrendered when accosted. Both were fined £2 and costs totalling 355. Pat Wahanga, was charged with a similar offence at Matata on December 21. Constable Julian gave evidence of having interrupted defendant with a partly consumed bottle of beer. Fined £2 and 35s costs.

A pakeha, Arthur Peck, admitted supplying two Maoris with liquor in Whakatane on February 14. Sergeant Farrell said that defendant had been observed walking down the waterfront with two Maoris following suspiciously behind him. They were discovered under the Rowing Club’s shed drinking. Fined £2 and costs 17s. Drink Near Dance A number of young men figured in a joint- charge of consuming liquor and having it in their possession in the vicinity of a dance hall at Ohope Beach on the night of December 30. They were Keith Armstrong, William O’Brien, Anthony Lane, Victor Rattray and James Mooney.

Constable Julian stated that all five had been seen entering cars and drinking. In the case of O’Brien, defendant had been seen to throw an empty bcrttle in front of the dance hall entrance.

A somewhat similar charge was preferred against Ronald King, of whom Sergeant Farrell said he had been found with two bottles of beer in the vicinity of the Winter Show Hall on the night of January 29. Defendant came of a good family and was a good hard working type. Fined £3 and costs 30s.
