CRUSHED BY TRACTOR
FATALITY AT MATAIIINA MAORI OPERATOR KILLED Whilst operating a tractor at the Matahina plantations last Monday morning* about; 10.30 a.m., a Maoi'i workman employed by the Whakatane Paper Mills, Hector Springbok Reihana, aged 25 years was killed instantly when his machine overturned on a sharp slope and crushed him.
The deceased who was about to take a load off the skids, with the assistance of his brother James Reihana, and another Maori, Laurence Rariti, drove the tractor over some young pine tops, which were of a slippery nature. The caterpillars refused to grip, and as the tractor started to overturn, he jumped clear on the side of the slope. The machine however overturned several times and caught him up as he sought safety.
An inquest for identification purposes was opened before Mr C. S. Armstrong, District Coroner, later in the day, and was adjouimed sine < ** e * A iffeifSL .
