PARENT-TEACHER ASSN.

SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL EVENING TWO INTERESTING TALKS There was a fair attendance of parents and teachers and others interested at the social evening sponsored by the Whakatane ParentTeacher Association on a recent evening. The guest speakers of the evening were Miss Tong, the Dental School Nurse, and Mr R .Chapman, the Manager of the Regent Theatre.

The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem. Rev. Bell, chairman, extended a welcome to the visitors and he also mentioned that the purpose of the gathering was not so much for entertainment, but to enable Parent-Teachers to get together and discuss problems that arose, and for everyone to do whatever possible to further the work of the school.

After the reading of the minutes, Mr Hubbard introduced and extended a wecome to the new teachers, following which the School Dental Nurse gave a most interesting talk outlining the new dental benefits. Miss Tong in her talk emphasised the importance of commencing dental supervision at the Clinic at an early age, two years not being too young to bring a child to the Clinic. An early friendly relationship 'with the Nurse, she said, fostered by story telling, bright pictures, playing with toys etc., inspired confidence and when the first filling was necessary the child accepted the Nurse’s administrations calmly, naturally and with interest. Two years was the earliest age at which enrolment was accepted. Mr R. Chapman, the Theatre Manager, spoke on the Formation and Aims of the Young New Zealanders Club. The idea originated in England during the war, and was taken over by the Millionaire Flour Miller and picture magnate, Mr Rank. Mr Rank’s strength in the English speaking countries was definitely a challenge to Hollywood and must in time improve the standard of picture programmes.
