DID YOU SEE IT?

MIDNIGHT PHENOMENON ILLUMINATED CLOUD Several residents in Borough and County report a, strange and mystifying phenomenon on Sunday night about 11.45 p.m. Those who noticed it claim that a far-reaching mass of cloud stretching well across the middle sky was illuminated suddenly with a vivid pink and golden light. So strong was this that it lit up the whole landscape as in early dawn, and it seemed impossible to believe that the time was nearly midnight. From reports the phenomenon lasted from 15 to 20 minutes and though uncanny in its intensity was nevertheless brilliantly arresting and very beautiful.

There is every reason to believe that the above was the later display of the Aurora Australis, which was seen at approximately the same time in Auckland and Hamilton.
