STILL-SECRET RADAR
U.S. . ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
BENEATH FROZEN EXPANSE
The United States Navy has sent on its Antarctic expedition six twinengine Douglas transport planes equipped with still-secret radar to indicate conformation of the ground beneath the great frozen expanse. The planes, a Navy statement explained, are equipped with jet devices which will enable them to rise from the decks of the carrier Philippine Sea. The Navy said the planes, Navy R-4 D’s, will be the first of their type ever, launched by a carrier. Special cold weather gear and electronic equipment is installed on the planes, together with extra tanks to extend their range beyond the usual eight or 10 hours. They have ski attachments for use in the snow. The icebreakers accompanying the expedition are equipped with landing platforms for the six helicopters to be used. The expedition also has six P.P.M.’s two Gruman amphibians, two observation float planes and one ski plane.
