THORNTON CLUB RECENT ACTIVITIES At the November meeting, Mr J. E. Hume, Orchardist Instructor Department of Agriculture, Tauranga, gave a very interesting lecture on Garden Hygiene and common diseases in fruit trees and vegetables. It was also decided that the club donate half of its wool proceeds to the local Boy Scout Troop. At the December meeting general business was dealt with. That the club enter a team in the Y.F.C. cricket competition and also challenge other clubs to tennis matches. Mr B. Butler, district representative of the Rangitaiki branch of the P.M.A. spoke on the history and work of the P.M.A. and also the marketing of pigs, bobby calves, fat and culled stock. At 'the January meeting general business was dealt with. Mr R. Cleland, club dele'gate to the Rangitaiki P.M.A., reported on a recent meeting. Mr F. Broadmore club member, gave a talk on two experiments being carried out at Ruakura namely, Identical twin calves and the experimental milking machine. Mr M. Law, club chairman, gave a talk on Lime. The club has now raised its quota for the National Y.F.C. Memorial, the quota being £SO. The present club membership is 32. On Wednesday, Jannary 22, a field day was held at Mr Jackson’s farm. In the morning stock judging was held to select a club* team to take part in the district stock judging competition. Mr Neil Carter judged the cows and competitors cards and also explained the terms ‘Line Breeding,’ Tn Breeding’ and ‘Blood Breeding.’ The following members are for the stock judging team: R. Cleland, A. Martin and A. Wilkins.
Members also inspected Mr Jackson’s 10 acre paddock of oats.
