BACK TO SCHOOL
TERM OPENS TODAY LONG HOLIDAY ENDS The long summer holidays for school children concluded over the weekend, and lessons commence today in the first term of 1947. The holidays have, like last year’s, been remarkable for the long spell of fine weather which covered twothirds of the entire six weeks since school break-up last December. As far as. Whakatane was concerned a greater percentage of children than usual, left the district for other parts. This was assisted substantially by the cadet camps at Papakura, where members of the local battalion underwent a refresher course of instruction.
Scout and Boys Brigade camps
claimed many others. A number- of ‘mumps’ victims were forcibly compelled to stay at home, but happily these were in the minority. The new school year opens auspiciously for Whakatane, with further additions to the High School and an automatically increased staff. This does not however, relieve the accommodation for teachers question, which, we are informed is even more acute than last year.
