DRUNK IN CHARGE

MOTORIST IN COURT INCIDENT AT OHOPE Before Messrs. C. H. Cfcristensen and S. S. Shaptey J.Vs., in the Whakatane Police Court yesterday Trevor Howick Shaw pleaded guilty to a charge of being found in charge of a truck at Ohope Beach on Wednesday last in a state of intoxication. He elected summary trial. Sergeant Farrell stated that accused was seen at 8.30 p.m. by Traffic Inspector Sharpe, on the Ohope Road in a state of intoxication, and brought into Whakatane where he was submitted to medical examination, and his condition affirmed. He came of a respectable family and this was his first offence. Cancellation of his license would probably mean his inability to carry on with his present job. Inspector Sharpe also added that accused depended upon his license for a livelihood and that cancellation' would mean a greater hardship than normally. "The court regards this type of offence very seriously," observed the senior Justice. "It is not a case of a young fellow driving whilst in a drunken state, it is the other people on the road, which he becomes a menace to. In view of what had been said . relative to accused's work, there will be no order for cancellation." A fine of £2O was imposed, the Bench issuing the warning that any repetition would mean cancellation i at once.
