ANNIVERSARY DAY SPORTS

GALA DAY AT OHOPE BRIGHT VARIED PROGRAMME

EXCELLENT CHOPPING EVENTS

There will be no reservations with regard to the prospect of repeating the Ohope Anniversary Day Sports next year, following the splendid success which crowned last Wednesday's effort by the Ohope Progress League. Held on the same reserve utilised by the Caledonian Society on New Year's Day, the sports, attracted a very large crowd which yielded a gate of

£l5O and provided a varied and • interesting series of athletic, chopping, piping, dancing and novelty events.

The greatest public interest centred round the chopping events which provided perhaps what was the best display of axemanship yet seen in the district. The entries were excellent and in all events close and exciting finishes were the rule.

There could be no mistake about the intensified interest in this popular sport, since the formation of the new Axemen's Association on the Rangitaiki.

The athletics were likewise interesting and keen. The juvenile events

found a surprising number of entries and never failed to draw a crowd. The most spectacular was, naturally enough, the two mile cross country race which was won by J. Chadwick, of Whakatane, who ran third over the same course on New Year's Day. The National Dancing section

drew competitions from Auckland, Rotorua, Hamilton, Wellington, Tauranga and Whakatane and was one of the brightest seen on the Ohope boards. A pleasing feature was the number of junior dancers who appeared on the stage and gave a good account of themselves. The piping and drumming section was rather disappointing as far as entries were concerned, but the events which were held drew warm praise fromthe judge, Mr McKay, of Opotiki. "The drumming particularly appealed to the crowd who gave the performers an ovation.

The marching by the two girls teams present, Whakatane Basketball and Ngongotaha, reached a high

standard and furnished the crowd with another thrill which drew spontaneous applause. Both these teams of - well trained young athletes in their attractive uniforms are to be congratulated on their showing. On the eastern ground, the Baby .Show was another point of attraction which drew many entries. As on previous occasions the usual

•team of willing workers staffed the * grounds and acted as efficient stewards for the numerous events. The refreshment tent staffed by a team of ladies from Ohope and Whakatane did excellent business. Mr R. •Cobbe, Chairman of the Progress League, is to be congratulated on the success of his first venture in the sporting sphere. Messrs. W. Hurst (organiser) and E. R. Marryatt (secretary) must not be overlooked for their splendid preparatory work in promoting the event which we earnestly hope will be the forerunner of an increasingly popular day in future years.
