Maori’s Death in 107th Year
Mr Temehana Kohiti, believed to have been born in the year that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed ‘(1840), died this week at his residence at Kauangaroa, about 14 miles from Wanganui. Born at a settlement on the Wanganui River, then known as the Knowsley River, at about the time the first European settlers were arriving, Mr Kohiti lived through some very adventurous years. He lived all the early part of his life on the river and then settled at Kauangaroa, 37 years ago. Almost right up until the last he could recall the stiring times when there were two blockhouses in Wanganui—the Rutland Stockade and the York Stockade.
