SALE OF LIQUOR

ILLEGAL SUNDAY TRADING LICENSEE AND CUSTOMERS FINED ■ f A surprise visit by the Whakatane police to the Matata Hotel on Sunday, December 29, led to the prosecution of the licensee, Herbert Lindsay Anderson, the barman, and two customers in connection with a number of charges which were heard before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning.

Sergeant Farrell who outlined the case, said that the police had arrived about noon, and had found the door to the bar open, and the barman (James King) serving liquor as in pursuance of his normal duties, to two customers who were drinking the liquor. He admitted that the licensee was absent at the time.

Mr Otley who appeared for all defendants pleaded guilty. The licensee on charges of exposing liquor for sale and of having his premises open at such time when they were required by law to be closed, was fined £lO and costs 225. The barman for supplying the liquor was fined £2 and costs 10s, while the two customers Percy Kregar and William T. Strawbridge, who were charged with consuming liquor on premises required by law to be closed, were fined £2 and costs 20s each.
