INTERRUPTED PARTY
MAORIS AND LIQUOR THREE FACE COURT The grove trees at the foot of Hillcrest was to have been the scene of a clandestine beer party on the evening of December 6th last, and doubtless would have been had not the police interrupted and dispersed it, after confiscating the beer and taking the names of those concerned. The result was the appearance in court yesterday of Tane Wahaponga Kingi, Whare Hauwai and Ben.Uatuku who were charged with having supplied Maori women with drink. Pleas of not guilty were entered, two of the accused admitting having drunk the beer but disclaiming having given it to the girls in question.
The girls, Mary Kera and Pollyanna Kelly, both of who were employed as domestics on the staff of the, Whakatane Hospital gave evidence to the effect that they had been persuaded by Uatuku to go to the trees for the purpose of having the beer. There they met the other two accused. Bottles were produced from the bushes and all present had several rounds until the police arrived. Each accused was fined £5, and costs,, amounting to 25s 6d.
