CANCER RESEARCH

TWELVE APPLICATIONS RECEIVED

NEW DUNEDIN APPOINTMENT

Twelve applications, all from Great Britain, have been reecived for the appointment of director of cancer research in Dunedin.

The applications are at present being considered by a special committee set up in Dunedin under the chaffmanship of Professor E. D’Ath.

A final selection from the recommendations of that committee will be made by central committee of the New Zealand Branch of the British Cancer Research Society, under the chairmanship of Sir James Elliott. It is expected that the name of the successful candidate will be made known this month.

The new director will be in charge of the cancer research department and laboratories which will be housed in the new block of the Otago Medical School.

He will require a number of assistants, but they will not be appointed till after his arrival in the Dominion.

Equipment Ordered

Certain basic equipment has been ordered, but the special apparatus required will not be obtained till the new director has been consulted.

Since 1929, a small department studying cancer has been in existence at the Otago Medical School, but some years ago its director, Dr. A. M. Beggs, went to- Britain, and is now engaged at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund’s laboratory in London. The New Zealand branch of the British Cancer Campaign Society has contributed to the British funds since Dr. Begg joined the staff of the London laboratory, but now that a director is to be appointed to the cancer department at the Otago, Medical School, the contribution will cease and be diverted to research work in Dunedin.

Ali’eady a great deal has been achieved at the various research departments at the Otago Medical School, and the appointment of a director of cancer research and the facilities which will be available in the new block, should give a further fillip to research in Dunedin.
